The Patrick Group at Mississippi State University

Welcome to the Patrick Group!

Our group  uses mass spectrometry and allied techniques to measure "more than mass" toward molecular analyses of societal relevance.
1
Ionic Liquids
Ionic liquids are used for many applications of societal importance, including as: propellants for spacecraft, electrolytes for batteries, and solvents for synthesis. Our group focuses on characterizing the decomposition products of ionic liquids in the gas phase and in the bulk.

2
Cultural Heritage and Sport
Our group aims to apply our knowledge of mass spectrometry and allied methods to important problems in society. We currently have active projects in anti-doping science, with a focus on detecting and quantifying performance-enhancing drugs.

We are also exploring ways to apply our expertise in mass spectrometry to the analysis of art and artifacts. To this end, we are developing methods for the characterization of relevant dye molecules.

3
Modified Biomolecules
Our group aims to apply complementary techniques (e.g., infrared ion spectroscopy, ion mobility spectrometry) to help identify and characterize post-translational modifications of peptides on a mass spectrometry-based platform and to improve characterization of metabolites. We are especially interested in isomer differentiation.
